Giving up a driver’s license can feel like losing your freedom. Many Hadley members have shared how emotionally difficult it was to give up their car keys. Over time, though, they found practical ways to get around and stay connected.
Here are 5 strategies to help make getting around a little easier:
1. Rethink your routine.
Take a fresh look at your weekly errands. Can grocery delivery services fill the gap? Could prescriptions be mailed instead of picked up? Fewer errand outings can reduce the stress of figuring out transportation.
2. Tap into community resources.
Many communities offer senior ride programs, paratransit, or volunteer driver networks. Your local Area Agency on Aging or public transit authority is a great place to start.
3. Coordinate with friends and family.
Hadley members agree that asking for rides can feel awkward. Yet family and friends often want to help. Being clear about exactly when and where you need to go is one way to make it easier for everyone. Using a shared calendar can make planning smooth.
4. Explore ride-sharing apps.
If you have a smartphone, apps like Uber or Lyft are practical and accessible options. If ride-share apps feel unfamiliar, try them out with a friend when you’re not in a rush. Learning in a relaxed situation can make a difference.
5. Build a transportation routine.
Consistency helps. If you go to an exercise class every Tuesday or schedule errands for Thursdays, it’s easier to coordinate rides and build routines that stick.
Without a driver’s license, creativity and planning help you get around and stay connected to what matters.
