BARD Screen Reader: Downloading and Transferring Book to Cartridge

Vikki: Hi, I'm Vikki Vaughan. And in today's workshop, we'll download a BARD book to our computer. We'll then transfer our book to an NLS digital talking book cartridge. Throughout the workshop, we'll refer to our storage device as a cartridge, but it's great to know we can also download books to USB flash drives.

This series is intended for screen reader users. If you prefer to use your mouse, be sure to check out the low vision version of this series on the Hadley website. Now it's important to note that we must have an active BARD account to use BARD Express. If you'd like to learn more, have a look at the first workshop in this series to learn how to set up your own free account.

In the Search BARD workshop, we selected our book and now we're ready for the next step. We have lots of choices at this point. We can add the book to our wishlist, download it, or view its details. We can also sort the order of our list. We explored book details and sorting the order in the recently added and search BARD workshops in this series. We'll have a look at adding a book to the wishlist, downloading a different book to our computer, and transferring it to our cartridge.

Let's say we're interested in a particular book, but don't have time to download it today. We found the book and it's sitting in a list in our search results. We've selected it by pressing the spacebar.

Screen Reader: Space, checked.

Vikki: This places a check box in the box next to the title. This is the perfect opportunity to add the book to our wishlist. We'll use our keyboard shortcut Alt + W for, you guessed it wishlist.

Screen Reader: And it re, please wait. One item added, Search BARD, list.

Vikki: The book will be stored in our wishlist until we're ready to download it to our computer. This is also a great option when we don't have room on our computer. When we're ready to download it, we open our wishlist with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + W.

Vikki: All of our items are listed, and the focus is on the first item in our list, All Books and Magazines. We can use our arrow keys to check out the rest of the list. We'll find Audio Books, Audio Magazines, Braille Books, and Braille Magazines. We can press our Home key to jump back up to the top of our list. Let's press Enter to see what's inside.

Vikki: Since we're in advanced mode, we see check boxes next to each title. This enables us to select more than one book or magazine at a time. If you'd like more information about advanced and standard modes, check out the recently added and most popular books workshop in this series. Okay, I think we're ready to download our book. In the search BARD workshop in this series, we searched for and selected a book to download. Let's head back to our search results by pressing Ctrl + S for search.

Screen Reader: Search BARD, list. "All the Light We Cannot See," a novel, Author, Doerr Anthony, Subject, Bestsellers/War Stories.

Vikki: And we'll press our Ctrl key to stop our speech. The book we wish to download today is here in our list. We select the book by checking the checkbox next to our title.

Screen Reader: Space, checked.

Vikki: In our next step, we use the keyboard shortcut Alt + D for download to begin the downloading process. We hear a tone as the download proceeds.

Screen Reader: "All the Light We Cannot See," a novel, check box selected, checked, Author, Doerr Anthony, Subject, Bestsellers/War Stories. Annotation, When Paris is invaded by the Nazis, Downloads are complete. Search BARD, list. "All the light we cannot see."

Vikki: Voila, our book is now downloaded to our computer, and it's ready to be transferred to our cartridge. Let's return to our main menu with the Escape key.

Screen Reader: Bookshelf, Ctrl + B button.

Vikki: Now, we'll jump to the bookshelf with you guessed it, Ctrl + B.

Screen Reader: Bookshelf, Organize By Type list. All Books and Magazines, Count, 7, one of seven.

Vikki: We find a list of the BARD materials on our computer. Let's press Shift + Tab to move back to the Organize By dropdown box.

Screen Reader: Organize By, combo box type collapse changes organization method.

Vikki: Now let's down arrow to see what other ways we can organize our bookshelf. The next option is by Subject.

Screen Reader: Subject.

Vikki: And when we press the down arrow once again, we hear that we can also organize by Author.

Screen Reader: Author.

Vikki: In today's workshop, we'll sort by Type. Let's up arrow back to that option.

Screen Reader: Subject, Type.

Vikki: Let's Tab to check out our categories under Type.

Vikki: Now we'll down arrow through our other categories.

Vikki: This last option on the list Unread Items is where we find the items that we've not yet transferred to our cartridge. Let's press Enter to open this list of Unread Items.

Screen Reader: We've landed in a list of Unread Items that are ready to be transferred to our cartridge. Let's press the spacebar to select the desired book on our list.

Screen Reader: Space, checked.

Vikki: It's time to copy our book to the cartridge. We'll use our keyboard shortcut Alt + C for copy.

Screen Reader: And it read only selected, 1 Books selected to copy. 168.3 Megabytes of space required.

Vikki: We've opened a window where we're asked to select the drive letter that our cartridge is connected to. Let's Tab to our desired drive.

Screen Reader: Pick a destination USB device, list, E, Name, SDXC Card, Free Space, 211.7 Gigabytes, Existing Books, 2 Books on Drive, one of one.

Vikki: Hang in there, we're at the finish line. Let's press Enter to begin the transfer process.

Screen Reader: OK button. Desktop, 11%, 21%. BARD Express dialog, Copied 1 of 1 Books. Would you like to eject the drive? Yes button, Alt + Y.

Vikki: We hear the progress tone, then a dialog box opens and we're asked if we'd like to eject the drive. When we're ready to listen to our book, we press Y for Yes, then disconnect the cartridge from our computer.

Screen Reader: Y, BARD Express dialogue, The drive was ejected. OK button.

Vikki: We're now ready to connect our cartridge to our digital book player for audio books, or our refreshable Braille device for Braille titles. Wow, we did it. BARD Express keeps track of all of our BARD materials, and makes downloading and transferring a breeze. In today's workshop, we downloaded and transferred a book using BARD Express.
