Braille Special Symbols Writing 4 - Basic Math Symbols

If you don't already know how to read basic math symbols, we recommend first doing Hadley's reading workshop, Braille Special Symbols, Workshop 4: Basic Math Symbols.

Alright, let's take a fast look at these symbols. Turn to page 11 in the workbook. At the top of the page, read the +, −, ×, ÷, and =.

Let's practice writing these symbols in sentences. Capitalization and punctuation will be read aloud only as needed for clarity. Be sure to write the braille symbol for +, −, ×, ÷, and = each time you hear the symbol. Also, write all numbers with numerals, not words.

To begin, start on a new line to write each sentence. Runover lines will be indented two spaces. Be sure to use capitalization and punctuation as you would in print and do not divide words between lines.

1. Mount Everest averages −19° C in summer and −36° C in winter.
2. Estimate 1/4 pizza per person; so, pizza ÷ 4 × number of students = number of pizzas needed.
3. There were 375+ people at the concert, but we expected 500+!
4. Line the − symbol with the − end of the battery before replacing into the slot.
5. The + sign in the window of the test means you tested positive for the flu.
6. Which will = 25: 9 × 3 or 100 ÷ by 4?
7. Select the + to expand the list of templates.
8. Did you find that your mistake was 48×5 rather than 48+5?
9. The area of the garden bed was 1'×8'.
10. Which is more; 499−100 or 13×30?
11. Travel + Leisure trends include using Airbnbs or other rental homes.
12. The friends split the cash 6 ways, so $120÷6 = $20 each!
13. I rated that movie at about a B−.
14. To dial from the US to Australia, use 011 + 61 + phone number.
15. The ski resort reported a dangerous wind chill of −24° F.
16. That was A+ work!
17. Mix 6 egg yolks + 1/3 cup sugar.
18. Any number ÷ 1 always = the number itself.
19. The picture showed 2 burgers on one side, an = sign in the middle, and 5 bowls of salad on the other.
20. Problem #5 is 68−24.
