Hello, my name is Douglas Walker. Today we will check out how to add a contact to our Contacts app. Now, when we create our new contact, we are only going to add some basic items or information. However, we will talk a little bit about some of the other types of items that can be added to our contact as well.
Okay, our Contacts app just so happens to be open and for the sake of privacy, we happen to have all of our contacts here hidden. However, we would typically be presented with an alphabetical list of all of the people that have been added to our Contacts app and we could simply just right swipe through all of them right here. Yeah, but today is all about creating a new contact. So, let's jump right in. All right, we have our add button here at the top right hand corner of our screen here. So, we'll go ahead and just touch our add button here.
VoiceOver: Add button.
Douglas: And we will just double tap here to begin adding our new contact. We'll just double tap.
VoiceOver: Text field is editing first name, insertion point at start.
Douglas: All right, our new contact screen of course, is open for us and we have been placed right in our first name edit field where we will, of course, add our new contact's first name. Now we are going to pretend that we have a new colleague here at Hadley. Her name is going to be Jane Smith. I'm not really that original but anyway, we'll go ahead and add here first name right here. So, we'll go ahead and just type Jane.
VoiceOver: Cap J, cap J, A-A, N-N-S-D-R-E-E.
Douglas: And there you go. Now we will need to go back up and touch in our first name edit field before we can continue swiping through our list here. Otherwise if we right swipe from here, we'll simply just begin swiping through our keyboard. So, let's go ahead and just touch our first name edit field here and we'll just touch here.
VoiceOver: First name text field is editing Jane character mode insertion point at end.
Douglas: Yeah, and we see that Jane is now in our first name edit field and now we can simply just begin to right swipe again. So, we'll go ahead and just right swipe here.
VoiceOver: Clear text button.
Douglas: And here is our clear text button so we can just double tap here and Jane would be deleted from our first name text field here. However, we're happy with Jane. So we'll just continue to right swipe from here. So, we'll just right swipe.
VoiceOver: Last name text field. Double tap to edit.
Douglas: And here is our text field for our last name. Now, we'll need to double tap in order to enter our last name text field here. So, we'll go ahead and do just that. We'll just double tap here.
VoiceOver: Insertion point at end.
Douglas: Great, and we'll just type Smith here. So we'll go ahead and type Smith.
VoiceOver: Cap S, cap S, M-M U-U-I-I-T-T-H-H.
Douglas: And there is her last name. Now, remember we will need to go back up and touch in our last name text field to continue. So, let's do it. Let's just touch in our last name text field here.
VoiceOver: Company last name text field is editing Smith character mode insertion point at end.
Douglas: And there it is. So we will just right swipe from here. And we'll right swipe.
VoiceOver: Clear text button.
Douglas: Yeah, here we have another clear text button for clearing the text for our last name text field. However, we're gonna leave ours as is and we will just right swipe again here. So we'll just right swipe.
VoiceOver: Company text field double tap to edit.
Douglas: Okay, and here we have a text field for adding the name of course of our company and since Jane Smith works at Hadley, we will simply add the word Hadley here. So we'll just double tap to enter our text field here. So we'll just double tap.
VoiceOver: Insertion point at end.
Douglas: Yeah and we'll just type Hadley here. So, we'll type Hadley.
VoiceOver: Cap H, cap H, A-A, D-D-L-L-E-E-Y-Y.
Douglas: Great and here is Hadley and again, we'll need to go back and touch in our company text field here. So we'll just touch it here.
VoiceOver: Company text field is editing Hadley character mode insertion point at end.
Douglas: All right, we hear that Hadley has been added. So we will just right swipe from here. So we'll just right swipe.
VoiceOver: Clear text button.
Douglas: And of course, we have another clear text button but we'll just right swipe instead of clearing here. So, we'll just right swipe again.
VoiceOver: Add phone button.
Douglas: Yeah, and here we are on an add phone button. So we'll just double tap to add Jane's phone number here. So we'll just double tap here.
VoiceOver: Add phone text field is editing phone character mode insertion point at start.
Douglas: Okay so now we've been placed in a text field for entering a phone number for our new contact and at the bottom of our screen, we no longer have our standard QWERTY keyboard but have been presented with a standard numeric keypad instead. So we'll go ahead and just type Jane Smith's Hadley number in here and how about, let's go ahead and just type Hadley's main number here. So we'll type that in.
VoiceOver: Eight, eight, four, four, seven, seven, four, four, four, four, six, six, eight, eight, one, one, one, one, one, one.
Douglas: Great, and now that we've entered Jane's number here, we will need to head back up of course and touch back in our phone text field here. So we'll just touch our phone field.
VoiceOver: Text field is editing 847 446 dash 8111 insertion point at end.
Douglas: And of course here it is and this is cool because just to the left of our phone text field, we have a label button and our label button gives us the ability to label the type of number this is for our contact. So, how about we go ahead and just left swipe to that and then we'll check out how all this works. So we'll just left swipe to that.
VoiceOver: Home button. Activate to choose type.
Douglas: Yeah, and the voice over just told us that we can activate this to choose type. So when we double tap on our button here, we will be presented with a list of label choices for our new phone number. So let's just go ahead and just double tap here.
VoiceOver: Cancel button.
Douglas: Yeah, like we said, we've been presented with a list for choosing the type of label that we want for our new phone number. So, since this is Jane's work phone number, we will just right swipe through our list to find our work label here. So we'll just right swipe a few times here.
VoiceOver: Label heading.
Douglas: And of course, here's our heading on the top center of our page. We'll just right swipe.
VoiceOver: Search, search field. Double tap to edit.
Douglas: And of course here's a search field but we're looking for our work label here. So we'll right swipe a couple of times.
VoiceOver: Dictate button.
Douglas: It's a dictate button.
VoiceOver: Selected home.
Douglas: This selected right now is home. We'll right swipe again here.
VoiceOver: Work.
Douglas: Yeah, and here is our work label. Of course, to select it, all we have to do is just double tap here. So, we'll go ahead and just double tap.
VoiceOver: Text field is editing 847 446 dash 8111 insertion point at end.
Douglas: Okay our label screen of course closed and we have been placed on our new phone number text field right back on our new contact page and our phone number looks great. Now we could just continue to right swipe because I'll tell ya, there are so many more items in our list that we can add for our contact and we can add information like an email address, a home or a work address, a website's URL or even our contact's birthday.
But for the sake of time, we are just gonna keep it simple and stop right here for now. However, we always have the ability to come right back to our contact and add more items if we like. So, how about we go ahead and just save our contact now. Okay, to save our contact, we need to find our done button in the top right hand corner of our screen here. So, we'll go ahead and just touch our done button.
VoiceOver: Done button.
Douglas: Yeah and here is our done button. So we will just double tap to save our contact here and we'll just double tap and this is so great. We've added Jane Smith as a new contact and you know it really is so nice that we have so many different items to choose from that we can save all of our contact's information right here in our Contacts app. Again, my name is Douglas Walker. Take care and I'll see ya next time.
