Advanced Talking Book Player: Navigating the Bookshelf

Vikki: Hi, I'm Vikki Vaughan and today we'll explore using the bookshelf, in the NLS Advanced Digital Talking Book player.

If you're unsure about which player you're using, there's an easy way to distinguish between the standard and advanced players. You'll want to locate the round speaker on the front of your player. If there are five keys below the speaker, labeled info, previous, menu, next and mark, you have the advanced player. The standard player does not have these five buttons. In another workshop in this series, we examined all of the buttons on our player and the function of each. Today, we'll jump right in to using several of these buttons to move between books stored on our portable storage devices. Let's start off by inserting our storage device into our player. For today's demonstration, we'll use an NLS cartridge. We use the same technique we learned today, whether we're using an NLS cartridge or a USB or flash drive.

Now, I've downloaded several books from the BARD catalog onto my NLS cartridge. If you'd like more information about downloading your favorite book or magazines, make sure you visit our BARD instructional series. Let's power up our player by pressing the power button.

NLS Player: Player on, three books. "Moby Dick or The Whale"

Vikki: Our player will beep and then automatically start playing from where it last left off. Let's press our play/stop button to stop playback. Well, we know that our play/stop button is the one we use when we wish to start or stop playback. But it also has another important function. It allows us to open our bookshelf, where we navigate between books on our storage device.

Imagine we're standing in front of a bookshelf filled with books. We've placed our hands on one of the shelves. When we move our fingers to the right, we land on a book. When we move again to the right, we land on another book. If we move our hands to the left, we land on a book, and again to the left, we find yet another book.

Our virtual bookshelf is much like this imaginary bookshelf. Our play/stop button takes us to the bookshelf, and our fast-forward and rewind buttons move us back and forth through our shelf. Let's activate our bookshelf. We'll hold down our play/stop button until we hear a beep and our player announces "Bookshelf."

Vikki: Once we hear the announcement, we lift our finger from the button. After the announcement, we hear that we currently have three books on our bookshelf and the focus is currently on the first book, "Moby Dick."

All of this information is really helpful. We know we're in our bookshelf, there are three books there and we currently are on the first book. That means we have more books to explore. Let's think about our imaginary bookshelf we discussed earlier. If we wish to move to our next book on the shelf, we move to the right. With our player's bookshelf, we press our fast-forward button to move to our right. It's conveniently located to the right of our play/stop button. Let's press it now.

NLS Player: Two. "Diabetes and Heart Healthy Cookbook"

Vikki: We heard a beep, the number two, and the title of our next book. Let's press the fast-forward one more time to hear the title of our third book.

NLS Player: Three, "The Journeyer"

Vikki: Okay, just for kicks, let's press the fast-forward button one more time.

Vikki: We heard the button beep, followed by two quick beeps and the title of our third book. Those two quick beeps tell us that we've reached the end of our book list. The player repeated the title of our third book. Now, I bet it's no surprise that when we wish to move back through our shelf, we move to the left. Let's press our rewind button one time.

Vikki: We heard that we've moved back to our second book, and we heard its title. Another press of the rewind button and our player announce the number one and the title of our first book.

NLS Player: One, "Moby Dick or The Whale"

Vikki: Let's press the rewind button one more time.

Vikki: And just like with our fast-forward button, we heard the double beep which tells us we've reached the top of our book list. We've moved back and forth through our bookshelf, now it's time to select our book. Once we hear the title we wish to open, all we need to do is press and release the play/stop button. Let's move forward to our second book and do just that.

Vikki: When we pressed our fast-forward button, we heard the familiar beep, the book number, and the title of our book. We know we're in the right place, so let's press and release the play/stop button.

Vikki: We heard a beep and the title of our book. Our player automatically starts playing our book for us. I pressed our play/stop button once again to stop playback. If we've already started our book, our player will resume playback where we last left off.

Congratulations, you've just use the bookshelf on the advanced NLS player. You can now easily navigate between books, magazines, even music files, on your portable storage devices.
