AirTags Screen Reader: Setting It Up

Hello, my name is Douglas Walker. Today is all about AirTags. AirTags are a super easy way of keeping up with all of your stuff.

Now, an AirTag is about the size of a quarter, and there are tons of accessories that will allow you to attach one your keys, put one on your cane or umbrella, or even slip one in your purse or backpack. Then you're all set. You'll use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to track down all of your favorite items from right there in your Find My app.

Okay, first things first, we'll want to make sure that we're running Apple's latest software. We'll also want our location services, our Find My and our Bluetooth settings to be turned on. And of course we'll find those things in our Settings app. Okay, how about we jump right in and check out how to set up a brand new AirTag.

All right, if our AirTag is new, when we first remove its plastic wrapping, we'll hear our AirTag play a little chime or sound. Yeah, just like that. And then we'll simply hold our AirTag near our device.

VoiceOver: Dismiss, dismiss button.

Douglas: Yeah, a little pop-up menu will appear here at the bottom of our screen, and then we'll simply right swipe to our Connect button. So we'll go ahead and just right swipe to that.

VoiceOver: AirTag heading. Connect button.

Douglas: Great, and there's Connect. So, we'll just double tap here.

VoiceOver: Dismiss button.

Douglas: Yeah, and Name AirTag screen will appear. And Apple has already given us a lot of item names to choose from. And so let's go ahead and just right swipe to our item name picker here. And we'll just swipe to that.

VoiceOver: Name AirTag heading.

Douglas: And there's our heading.

VoiceOver: Backpack. Pick your item. Adjustable. 1 of 11. Swipe up or down with one finger to adjust the value.

Douglas: Yeah, and like voiceover said, we can swipe up or down to pick from this list here. So, we'll just swipe up and we're gonna swipe all the way to the bottom of those lists. I will swipe up a few times.

VoiceOver: Bike, 2 of camera, 3 of 11. Handbag, 4 of 11.

Douglas: Now, a lot of choices here.

VoiceOver: Headphones, 5 of- jacket- keys- luggage, 8- umbrella, 9 of 11 wallet, 10 of 11. Custom name, 11 of 11.

Douglas: Yeah, and if we select "Custom Name" here at the bottom of our list we can actually type in our own item name, yeah. Now I'm always misplacing my keys, so how about we move back up to our Keys item here? So we'll swipe down to move back up to our keys here.

VoiceOver: Wallet, 10 of 11.

Douglas: Swipe down a couple of times.

VoiceOver: Umbrella, 9 of 11. Luggage, 8 of 11. Keys, 7 of 11.

Douglas: Yeah. And here's our keys item. So now we'll just right swipe to find our continue button here. So we'll just right swipe.

VoiceOver: Continue button.

Douglas: And we can just double tap to continue. Double tap.

VoiceOver: Register AirTag to your Apple ID.

Douglas: All right, we have been given an Apple ID verification screen. And we'll just right swipe through this to continue. So we'll just right swipe a couple of times here.

VoiceOver: Close button.

Douglas: And here's our Close button. But we don't want to close it. So we'll just swipe, I think one more time here.

VoiceOver: Continue button.

Douglas: Yeah, and here's Continue. So we will double tap to register our AirTag with our Apple ID. And we'll double tap.

VoiceOver: Dismiss button.

Douglas: And we're connecting here. Map.

Douglas: All right, our AirTag made a little chime sound. I love it. Just one more step and we're all done here. Okay so here, we're given an AirTag information screen with some really great hints. So how about we quickly right swipe through our screen here and we'll check it all out. So we'll just go ahead and right swipe a few times.

VoiceOver: Dismiss button.

Douglas: And there's our dismiss. We don't want to dismiss. We'll right swipe.

VoiceOver: Douglas's Keys heading.

Douglas: Yeah there's our heading.

VoiceOver: Current location with you.

Douglas: And there's my location there.

VoiceOver: Precision finding. When AirTag is nearby, an arrow will point to its precise location.

Douglas: Okay, so we're told that an arrow can point us right to our AirTag here. And we'll swipe.

VoiceOver: Play sound. Find your AirTag by playing a sound from your iPhone.

Douglas: Yeah we can actually make our AirTag play a sound. And we'll right swipe.

VoiceOver: Directions in maps. View this AirTag on a map and use the Maps app to navigate to it.

Douglas: Yeah and we can actually use our maps to find our AirTag which is pretty cool. Now we actually have two more workshops in this series that show us how to do all of these things and more. So you're really going to want to check those out. Now we do have two more buttons here. We have a View in Find My app button and we have a Done button. You know, both of these buttons will actually finish our setup process. So let's go ahead and swipe to our View in Find My app button. Yeah. So we'll go ahead and just right swipe again.

VoiceOver: View and Find My app button.

Douglas: Great. And there it is. So we will just double tap and we'll check out where we can find all of our items. So we will double tap.

VoiceOver: Find My.

Douglas: Okay our Find My app has opened right in our Items tab. And we find that Douglas's keys, that would be me, is right here in our items list. And hey, there you go. That pretty much covers how to set up a brand new AirTag. I tell ya, sometimes I feel like I spend half my day looking for things. Well, not anymore.
