Workbook Page 5: Brailling h

Let’s learn to write the next set of letters: h, i, and j.

We recommend completing the Braille for Everyday Use: Letters h-j workshop before writing this set of letters.

Once your paper is in your writing device and ready to go, let’s begin.

In the first cell, on a new line, we’ll start by writing the letter “h.”

H is dots 1-2-5. It uses the top two dots on the first side and the middle dot on the second side.

Make a row of h’s, leaving a space or empty cell between the letters.

When you’re ready to check your work, select Next.

Now go to the workbook to check your writing.

Turn to Page 5 and feel the letter h in the top-left corner of the page.

Below the h, you’ll find a whole row of h’s.

Compare your h’s to this row. Did you use the correct dots?

When you’re ready, select Next to continue.

Back to your writing device, move down to the next line to write, “i.”

In the first cell, make an i, dots 2-4. I is the middle dot on the first side and the top dot on the second side.

Now make a row of i’s, leaving a space between the letters.

To check your work, select Next.

You can check the i’s you wrote with the i’s on Page 5 of the workbook, on the second row.

Are the i’s you brailled facing the correct direction?

After you’ve checked your braille, select Next to continue.

Move to the next line of your writing to write, “j.”

In the first cell, make a j, dots 2-4-5.

J is the middle dot on the first side and the top and middle dots on the second side.

Make a row of j’s with spaces.

When you’re finished, select Next to check your braille.

You can check your j’s by comparing them to the j’s on Page 5 in the workbook, on the third row.

H and j are also, “corner letters.” They form the bottom corners and are opposite of each other.

Make sure your j’s are made with the correct dots.

When you’re ready to keep going, select Next.

On the next line of your writing device, practice making all three letters you just worked on.

Write, “h” space, “i” space, “j” space, then repeat this across the line.

It’s helpful to stop and think about the dot numbers of each letter as you write.

When you’re ready to check this row of letters, select Next.

Now, go to the fourth row on Page 5 in the workbook to find a row of these same letters.

While you compare your work to this row, pay close attention to be sure the h’s and j’s are written correctly.

Like d and f, these two are also corner letters, and they’re easily reversed.

If you want more practice, go ahead and try that row again.

And when you’re ready to write some words, select Next.

Let’s put our new letters together, along with some letters we learned earlier, to make some words.

To give yourself time to write, just select Pause to write and then Play when you’re ready for the next word.

On the next line of your writing device, starting in the first cell, write the word, “had.”

Then leave a space before the next word. Or you can write each word on a new line.

Now write, “high,” h-i-g-h.

How about, “jig,” j-i-g.

Next, try, “jab.”

And now, write, “if.”

When you’re ready to check these words, select Next.

Find the middle line on Page 5 in the workbook.

Below this line are five more rows of braille to check your writing.

Check the words you brailled with these words in rows one through five: had, high, jig, jab, if.

Turn to Page 6 in your workbook, and select Next to start a new set of words.

Now you’re ready to continue writing words using letters a through j.

Let’s try writing, “head,” h-e-a-d.

Now, “hedge,” h-e-d-g-e.

How about, “jib,” j-i-b.

And now, “jade.”

When you’re done writing, select Next.

You can check these words on Page 6.

In the top-left corner of Page 6, find the letter i.

The words you just wrote are on rows one, two, three, and four at the top of this page.

The words are: head, hedge, jib, and jade.

How are you doing with your writing? Are you finding that any particular letters are tricky?

When you’re ready to keep going, select Next.

Let’s try some more! Write the word, “hide.”

How about, “fig.”

Next is chia, “c-h-i-a.”

Now try, “hajj,” h-a-j-j.

And now, write the word “fief,” f-i-e-f.

When you’re done writing, select Next.

You can check these words on Page 6 of the workbook, below the middle line.

The words: hide, fig, chia, hedge, and fief are on rows one through five below the line.

Now turn to Page 7 in your workbook, and select Next to start a new set of words.

Let’s practice a few more words using letters a through j.

To give yourself time to write each word, use the Pause button. And you can also replay this page at the end.

Try writing, “chief,” c-h-i-e-f.

How about, “hijab,” h-i-j-a-b.

Now write, “jagged,” j-a-g-g-e-d.

And write, “beach,” b-e-a-c-h.

When you’re ready to check your writing, select Next.

You can check your work on Page 7.

In the top left corner of Page 7, find the letter j.

On rows one through four at the top of the page, you’ll find the words you just wrote: chief, hijab, jagged, beach.

After you’ve checked your work, select Next.

Now, let’s write some phrases.

Start on a new line on your writing device in the first cell.

Braille the phrase, “a cafe chef.” Remember to leave a space or blank cell between each word.

Just select Replay to hear this slide again.

To check your work, select Next.

In the workbook, find the middle line on Page 7.

The first row below the middle line says, “a cafe chef.” Did you write it correctly? If you have any questions, be sure to reach out to a braille expert. They’ll be happy to help.

Select Next to try some more phrases.

Now let’s write a few more phrases.

Use the Pause button to give yourself time to braille each phrase.

Then select Play to get the next phrase to braille. And you can replay this audio at the end, too.

Move to the next line on your paper and write the phrase, “a big idea.”

Next, write, “jagged hedge,” h-e-d-g-e.

How about the phrase, “had a chai,” c-h-a-i.

And now write, “jade dice.”

Select Next to check these phrases.

Turn to the workbook again to check your work.

On Page 7, below the middle line, find rows two through five.

Here are the phrases you just wrote: a big idea, jagged hedge, had a chai, jade dice.
