Swift Playgrounds: Entering Code

Hello, my name is Douglas Walker. Today we will check out how to activate our onscreen keyboard and how to easily enter code by using our code suggestion bar. Now, we're using our iPad in landscape view today because we have found that we have much more screen space available to us. And when we are using VoiceOver, all of our elements are much easier for us to navigate.     

Now, we can easily make our code suggestion bar visible by performing a single-finger double tap here in our code edit field, which, of course, is just below our coding instructions here. Okay. We've already activated our code edit field, and our code suggestions bar is already visible across the bottom edge of our screen. All right.

If we need to manually type in a code, we will need to make our onscreen keyboard visible. And we just so happen to have a “show keyboard” button here in the bottom right hand corner of our screen. Our “show keyboard” button is actually the last element in our code suggestions bar. So let's go ahead and just touch our “show keyboard” button. And we'll just touch it here.

VoiceOver: Show keyboard button.

Douglas Walker: All right. So here we are, on our “show keyboard” button. And we'll just single-finger double tap to activate or make our onscreen keyboard visible. So we'll just double tap anywhere here.

VoiceOver: Show keyboard. Hide keyboard.

Douglas Walker: Great. Our onscreen keyboard of course is now visible. And we're ready to begin typing in our code.

Okay. We probably heard VoiceOver announce “hide keyboard.” And this is because our “show keyboard” button in the bottom right-hand corner here turned into a “hide keyboard” button once it was actually activated. So you guessed it, all we need to do is just single-finger double tap again, and our onscreen keyboard will no longer be visible.

Now, we'll still have access to our codes suggestion bar across the bottom edge of our screen. And we'll simply be using our code suggestion bar for entering our code in today's videos. So how about we just single-finger double tap, and we'll hide our onscreen keyboard for now.

VoiceOver: Hide keyboard. Show keyboard button.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. Our onscreen keyboard has collapsed. And, of course, it's no longer visible.

All right. We'll just touch here in the bottom left-hand corner of our screen, and we'll orient ourself to our first tool. Here in our code suggestion bar. So we'll just touch.

VoiceOver: Undo.

Douglas Walker: All right. We're in our code suggestion bar. And our “undo” button is our first tool, of course, here.

Now, our undo button makes it super-easy to quickly undo our last entry. Yeah, I've actually had to use this a couple of times. Anyway, we'll go ahead and just right-flick from here. And we check out the rest of our code suggestion bar. So we'll just right-flick.

VoiceOver: Redo.

Douglas Walker: And here we have our redo button. So we have the ability to redo as well. Now, when we right-flick again, we'll actually be presented with code suggestions for entering into our code edit field. So we'll just right-flick from here. And we'll right-flick.

VoiceOver: Collect gem left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: Great. Here is our collect gem code suggestion. And you guessed it, we would just single-finger double tap. And our collect gem line of code would be automatically added to our code edit field, which I tell you, is super-simple.

Okay. Let's quickly flick through the rest of our code suggestion bar. And then we'll actually start entering some code here. So we'll just right-flick.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. And here is our move forward command, which is our second suggestion. And so that's pretty great. So we'll just go ahead and right-flick, though, here.

VoiceOver: Turn left left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: Okay. Here is our turn left, which just so happens to be our final code suggestion. However, we do have a couple more tools here in our suggestion bar. So we'll quickly just check them out here. So we'll just quickly right-flick here.

VoiceOver: Delete.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. And we have a “delete” button for deleting any unwanted text. So that's pretty useful there. So we'll go ahead and right flick here.

VoiceOver: Return.

Douglas Walker: We have our “return” button, for moving to our next line of code. And if we flick one more time ... And why don't we do just that. So we just right-flick again.

VoiceOver: Show keyboard button.

Douglas Walker: We have our “show keyboard” button again here in the bottom right-hand corner of our screen.

All right, that pretty much covers all of our suggestions bar tools. So how about we use it to enter some code here. Now, our character [Byte 00:05:37] is right here in column five, row zero of our world grid. And we need to move forward two times here to move a little bit closer to our gem.

So we'll just left-flick back to our “move forward” suggestion. So we'll go ahead and just left flick here. And we'll left flick.

VoiceOver: Return.

Douglas Walker: Of course, there's return. We'll left flick again.

VoiceOver: Delete.

Douglas Walker: And there's our delete. Left flick.

VoiceOver: Turn left left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: That's a turn left there. We don't want to turn left, we want to go forward. So we'll left-flick.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: Great. And here is our move forward code. So we'll just single-finger double tap and enter it here. So we'll just double tap.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. And we have added our move forward code to our code edit field. However, we do need to move forward one more time here. So we just simply double tap again. And we'll double tap.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren.

Douglas Walker: Great. And we're getting there. It looks like we need to make a left turn here in our world grid. So we'll just right flick to our turn left suggestion here. So we'll just right flick.

VoiceOver: Turn left left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: All right. And we'll simply just single-finger double tap here. And we'll just double tap.

VoiceOver: Turn left left paren right paren.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. Our turn left code has been added here to our code edit field. And it looks like we need to move forward here two more times. So we'll just left flick back to our move forward here.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: Great. So here is our move forward code. And we'll just single-finger double tap here.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. And we've added our move forward code again. But again, we need to move forward one more time. So we'll just single-finger double tap here again.

VoiceOver: Move forward left paren right paren.

Douglas Walker: All right. We need just one more line of code here. We need to actually collect our gem. So we'll just left flick to our collect gem suggestion here. So we'll just left flick.

VoiceOver: Collect gem left paren right paren. Code completion.

Douglas Walker: Great. So here's our collect gem code. So we'll just double tap. And we'll double tap.

VoiceOver: Collect gem left paren right paren.

Douglas Walker: Yeah. And this is great. Our final line of code has been added to our code edit field here. We're all ready to run our code. So we'll simply just left-flick until we find our “run my code” button. So we'll just left flick a few times here. And we'll left-flick.

Douglas Walker: That's our redo button, so we'll left-flick.

Douglas Walker: Of course, there's undo button. And we'll left flick again.

Douglas Walker: And there is our hint button. We flick one more time here.

Douglas Walker: All right. Here is our “run my code” button. So, hey, let's do it. We'll just single-finger double tap to run our code here. And we'll just double tap.

I tell you, it really is so great that we can type in our code by using our on-screen keyboard if we like.
