Hello, my name is Douglas Walker. Today, we will be solving a simple puzzle. We're using our iPad in landscape view because we have found that we have much more screen space available to us and when we're using VoiceOver, all of our elements are much easier to navigate.
The first thing that we'll wanna do is to check out all of our instructions. We have instructions here on the left side of our screen that will explain exactly what is expected for solving our puzzle. How about we check out our puzzle here? We'll just touch at the top of the left side of our screen to find the goal here for our instructions. We'll go ahead and just touch. We'll touch.
VoiceOver: Instructions. Goal. Use Swift commands to tell Byte to move and collect a gem.
Douglas Walker: We are told that we will be collecting a gem in our puzzle today. That's pretty great. Let's just right flick through the rest of our instructions here. We will be told step by step exactly what we need to do. We'll just right flick through our instructions. We'll right flick.
VoiceOver: Your character, Byte, loves to collect gems but can't do it alone. In this first puzzle, you'll need to write Swift commands to move Byte across the puzzle world to collect a gem.
Douglas Walker: We're told we'll need to write commands here. We'll just right flick again.
VoiceOver: One.
Douglas Walker: And, we'll right flick.
VoiceOver: Look for the gem in the puzzle world.
Douglas Walker: Okay, so we need to look for the gem here in the puzzle world. There's number two, coming up.
VoiceOver: Two. Enter the correct combination of the moveForward() and collectGem() commands.
Douglas Walker: We know that we're gonna have to move forward a number of times and then we're gonna have to collect our gem once we do. We'll right flick to our-
VoiceOver: Three.
Douglas Walker: ... last instruction here.
VoiceOver: Tap Run My Code.
Douglas Walker: The last thing we need to do is actually run our code when we're finished there. We need to right flick down to our edit field here, so we'll right flick.
VoiceOver: Code. Empty line. Text field is editing. Character mode. Insertion point at start.
Douglas Walker: Now that we know all of our instructions or all of our steps here, how about we take a look where our character Byte and our gem are located in our puzzle grid here. To find our character and our goal locations, we'll simply touch on the right hand side of our screen, and we'll touch just outside of our world grid here. Let's go ahead and just touch. We'll touch here.
VoiceOver: The world is five columns by five rows. Byte at height zero, facing north on column two, row one. The goals are gem at height one on column two, row four. To repeat this description, tap outside of the world grid. Actions available.
Douglas Walker: This is great because we are told that our world is five columns here by five rows. VoiceOver also announced that our character Byte is at height zero, facing north and he's on column two, row one here. Last but not least, we are told that our gem is located at column two, row four here. This is a lot of information, however we were also told that we have custom actions available.
Our custom actions will give us the exact location of both our character and our gems. With custom actions, we know that we can simply flick up or flick down our screen to check them all out. Let's go ahead and do that. We'll just flick down. We'll flick down our screen.
VoiceOver: Character locations.
Douglas Walker: If we single finger double-tap, we will be given our character location. This is great. We'll just single finger double-tap here.
VoiceOver: Byte at height zero, facing north on column two, row one.
Douglas Walker: Again, we were told that Byte is at height zero and he's facing north here, and that he's on column two, row one. That's great. Let's go ahead and flick down again. We'll flick down.
VoiceOver: Goal locations.
Douglas Walker: We were told that we can find our goal locations, so we'll just double tap here. We'll double tap.
VoiceOver: Gem at height one on column two, row four.
Douglas Walker: We were told that our gem is at height one and on column two, row four. There you go. We know that Byte and our gem are both right here on column two, so how about we just touch Byte here in column two, row one. We'll just touch.
VoiceOver: Column two, row one. Start marker at height zero, facing north. Byte at height zero, facing north. Double-tap to switch characters. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double-tap to activate.
Douglas Walker: Here is our friend Byte. Since we know our gem is located on row four at the top of our column two here, we know that we can simply just right flick up our column here to find it. Let's do just that. We'll right flick to find our gem. We'll just right flick a couple of times here. We'll right flick.
VoiceOver: Column two, row two. Block at height zero. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double-tap to activate.
Douglas Walker: We've moved up to row two on column two here, so we'll just right flick again. We'll right flick.
VoiceOver: Column two, row three. Stairs leading to height one from row two. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double-tap to activate.
Douglas Walker: We're gonna hear that hint every time. Here's some stairs that we're gonna encounter. I think we're gonna right flick one more time here. We'll just right flick.
VoiceOver: Column two, row four. Gem at height one. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double-tap to activate.
Douglas Walker: Here is our gem. Now that we know the path for finding our gem, how about we simply just enter our code and we'll move Byte right up our column here. Our cursor's already active over here in our edit field. We will use our code suggestion bar for actually entering our code today. To orient ourself to our code suggestion bar, we'll simply just touch here in the bottom left hand corner of our screen. We'll just touch.
VoiceOver: Undo.
Douglas Walker: Here we are on our code suggestion bar. We know that we need to move forward three times to collect our gem, so we will just right flick to find our move forward command. We'll just right flick here. Right flick.
VoiceOver: Redo.
Douglas Walker: Here's our redo button. We'll right flick again.
VoiceOver: CollectGem ().
Douglas Walker: We're-
VoiceOver: Code completion.
Douglas Walker: ... almost there. We'll right flick one more time.
VoiceOver: MoveForward(). Code completion.
Douglas Walker: Here we are on our move forward code suggestion. We'll simply just double-tap to enter our code in our code edit field here. We'll just single finger double-tap.
VoiceOver: MoveForward().
Douglas Walker: Our command has been entered, however we know that we need to move forward a couple more times here in order to collect our gem, so we'll just double-tap two more times here. We'll just double-tap again.
VoiceOver: MoveForward().
Douglas Walker: We'll double-tap one more time here.
VoiceOver: MoveForward().
Douglas Walker: You guessed it, we need to left flick back to our collect gem suggestion here. We'll just left flick.
VoiceOver: CollectGem(). Code completion.
Douglas Walker: Here is our collect gem code suggestion here. We'll just double-tap. We'll double-tap.
VoiceOver: CollectGem().
Douglas Walker: All of our code here for collecting our gem has now been entered into our code edit field. This is great. We're ready to run our code. All we need to do is just simply left flick until we find our Run My Code button. Let's do it. We'll just left flick here. We'll left flick.
VoiceOver: Redo.
Douglas Walker: We'll left flick again.
VoiceOver: Undo.
Douglas Walker: Here's our undo button here. We'll left flick again.
VoiceOver: Hint button.
Douglas Walker: We'll left flick one more time.
VoiceOver: Run My Code button.
Douglas Walker: This is super. Here is our Run My Code button. Hey, let's run it. We will just single finger double-tap here. We'll double-tap.
VoiceOver: Run My Code Stop button.
Speaker 3: Byte walked to column two, row two. Byte walked up to height one, column two, row three. Byte walked to column two, row four. Byte collected gem at column two, row four.
VoiceOver: Congratulations. Patting.
Douglas Walker: We have run our code and hey, we have collected our first gem. That is pretty great. We've also had a pop-up menu appear from our hint button that we encountered earlier. We can simply just right flick through our pop-up here to move to our next page and we could begin solving our next puzzle.
There you go. If we just take our time and carefully read our instructions, find our character and goals in our world grid and use our code suggestion bar to enter our code here, before we know it the process really will get easier with every new puzzle that we encounter.
Again, my name is Douglas Walker. Take care and I'll see you next time.
