iPhone/iPad VoiceOver: Selecting, Copying, and Pasting Text

Douglas: Hello, my name is Douglas Walker. Today we will be taking a look at how to select, copy and paste text. So how about we jump right in and check it out.

All right, we will begin by first selecting some text. Now a great place to practice all of this is our Notes app, and we just so happen to be in our Notes app. And we're in a demonstration note that says, "We will check out just how easy it is to select, copy and paste text."

Yeah, this gonna be our text that we will practice with today. Now we will use a rotor to select our text, and if we're not yet familiar a rotor, we just so happen to have a rotor workshop. So we just might wanna check that one out. Yeah, we're at the very top of our note here. So let's go ahead and select some text. So we'll go ahead and just move through our rotor here and find out text selection here in our rotor

VoiceOver: Lines

Douglas: We'll go for

VoiceOver: Text selection, swipe right to expand selection, swipe left to shrink selection.

Douglas: Great. And here we are on our text selection element and VoiceOver announced that we could swipe right to expand our selection. And we were told that we could swipe left to shrink our selection, and that's great. But first, we need to decide exactly how we want to select our text. We can select our text by character, word, line, page, or we can even select all of our text if we like. And we'll simply swipe up or down our screen to pick how we want to select our text. You know, how about we select by words so let's just swipe down until we find words here. So we'll just swipe down here.

VoiceOver: Word selection.

Douglas: Alright. That was quick. But now that we are selecting by word, instead of swiping up and down, we will just begin swiping to our right to select one word at a time here. Okay, so let's do it. We'll just right swipe one time here and we'll right swipe.

VoiceOver: We selected.

Douglas: Great. We heard VoiceOver announced the word we and we also heard that it has been selected. And that is pretty great. All right, so how about we right swipe a few more times here to select a little more text to copy and we'll just right swipe a few times here. Yeah, Just right swipe

VoiceOver: Will selected, Check selected, out selected, just selected.

Douglas: All right, and we'll just stop here. You know, let's say that we went a word too far And we don't want to really select the word just here. Well, you've probably already guessed that all we need to do to unselect by word is just swipe back to our left. So let's do it. We will just left swipe here. We'll just left swipe,

VoiceOver: Just unselected.

Douglas: And there you go. We heard VoiceOver announced our word, just and we were also told that it is now unselected. And how cool is that? Yeah, so that's how we will select our text. Now, Apple has given us a really great way to check the text that we've selected. Yeah, we'll use our Speak Selection gesture, and this is our three finger single tap. So we'll just do our three finger single tap here.

VoiceOver: Selected text, we will check out

Douglas: Great and we heard VoiceOver announce selected text and then we we're told that our selected text is we will check out. And I tell you, that is pretty great. All right, so now that we have selected some text, let's check out how we will go about copying it. Okay, we will need to return to our rotor. So, let's find our edit element here in our rotor, and we'll just move here,

VoiceOver: Characters, misspelled words, edit.

Douglas: Okay, and here is our edit element. Now, we will use the same steps that we use in our selecting element. We just swipe down until we find our copy option here. So let's just swipe down,

VoiceOver: Decrease indentation. Copy.

Douglas: Okay, and here is our copy option. And now we can copy our selected text by just performing our one finger double taps. Well, we'll just one finger double tap here.

VoiceOver: We will check out copied.

Douglas: All right, we heard a little click sound and VoiceOver announced that we will check out has been copied. So what we know for sure that our selection has been copied, and we are now ready to paste it in another edit field. Now we could paste it in maybe an email, a text message or anywhere that we might have an edit field. But how about since we already have our Notes app open, we just paste our selection in a new note here, so we'll need to begin a new note. But first, we'll need to stop editing our note here by finding our done button in the top right hand corner of our screen. And we'll just touch our done button here.

VoiceOver: Done button.

Douglas: Alright, and we'll just double tap here.

VoiceOver: Done.

Douglas: Great. Our new note button is in the bottom right corner of our screen. So we'll just touch Our new note button here, we'll just touch it

VoiceOver: New note button. Double tap to compose a new note.

Douglas: And of course, we'll double tap to begin our new note here. So we'll just double tap,

VoiceOver: Note text field is editing character mode insertion point at start.

Douglas: Alright, we have been placed right in the edit field of our new note. And, hey, this is great, we are ready to paste our copied text. All right, we will need to once again use our rotor. I know who would have thought it right. But anyway, we will need to choose Paste from our edit elements. So we'll once again move through our rotor and find our edit element again here. So we'll just move

VoiceOver: Misspelled words. Edit

Douglas: Rotor Yeah, and here is our edit element again. So we'll just swipe down until we find our paste option here. So we'll just swipe down.

VoiceOver: Paste.

Douglas: Yeah, and that was easy here it is. So we all We need to do is just double tap in our copied text will be pasted right here in our new note. So we'll go ahead and just double tap here.

VoiceOver: We will check out.

Douglas: All right, we heard VoiceOver speak our pasted text, and this is great, our selected text has been pasted right in our new note. And there you go. It is as easy as that. Well, actually, there is a lot to get used to. However, if we just practice each of our steps one at a time, I tell you, before we know it, selecting, copying and pasting text will soon become second nature. Again, my name is Douglas Walker.
