Today we'll look at Google's Reading Mode app. This is a free app that makes longer text like articles and emails easier to read. For looking at the text, we can adjust the displays, font, color spacing and more.
My sight is slowly getting worse, and I have to be very aware of that. I'm an avid reader. I thought, oh, I'm not gonna be able to read anymore.
[Ricky] Today we're gonna check out how to use an app along with the camera on our phone to read documents. We can read things like restaurant menus, handouts and flyers, those credit card offers that are always too good to be true. Yeah, there's so much printed material we need to access, and with the Seeing AI app, we'll be able to get all that text spoken aloud. It's really cool.
[Ricky] Today we're gonna check out how to use an app along with the camera on our phone to read the text on things around us. We can read product boxes, street signs and room numbers, the envelopes that usually turn out to be junk mail. Yeah, there's text everywhere. And with the Seeing AI app, we'll be able to get all that text spoken aloud. It's really cool. We're using TalkBack in this workshop, so that we can do everything on our phone without looking at the screen.

Vikki: In this workshop, we'll explore reading a document. We'll be using one of the most popular apps for people with visual impairments on the market today. Seeing AI is an app that uses the camera on our phone to read text aloud. This app not only reads text, but also identifies products, describes pictures and identifies currency.

Hi, my name is Ricky Enger. And today we're gonna check out our gestures for reading text with TalkBack. We're using a Google Pixel phone for our workshop here, but what we're learning should be pretty much the same for a lot of other Android phones as well. For some phones though, these reading gestures aren't gonna work because the phone is set up to use gestures with just one finger to do things. We have some really great resources showing exactly what to do if these reading gestures don't work for you. So go ahead and scroll down the workshop page and check out the Resources area to find that. Plus there's info on how to contact us if you need to.
In an earlier workshop, you learned about two-handed tracking and the beginning split hands technique. Now, let's build on those methods and learn some new moves that can help you read even more quickly and smoothly.
Knowing how to place your hands and move them across the page smoothly will help you get more comfortable with your braille reading. And with a little practice you'll begin to read faster and more accurately, which helps you enjoy your reading even more. So let's jump in and get started.
