To begin, make sure you have your braille workbook with you.

If you don’t already have one, call Hadley at 847-784-2816 and we’ll mail one right out to you.

Now let’s learn a new set of contractions.

Feel the braille in the top left corner of the page.

These new contractions are dot 46 final-letter groupsigns.

These are the groupsigns s-i-o-n, a-n-c-e, and o-u-n-t.

They use dots 46 followed by the final letter in the group of letters they represent.

Like other final-letter contractions, these can only be used in the middle or end of a word.

Above the middle line, you’ll find three rows of braille. Let’s read these together.

The first row is the groupsign sion.

The second row is ance.

And the third row is ount.

Below the middle line, you’ll find three rows of words.

As you read the braille and work through the activities on these pages, use the Pause button or spacebar to pause for as long as you need to.

Read the words in the first row.

This row says “vision,” “mansion,” “sessions.”

Now, read the words in the second row.

Did you read, “dance,” “prance,” and “chances?” That’s right!

Now, read the second sentence.

If you said, “With fearless abandon, we tirelessly bounded up the mountain trails, you got it!

Near the top of the page, you’ll find four rows of braille.

Read the groupsign at the beginning of the first row.

Now, read the rest of the row to find which group of letters represents the groupsign, the first choice or the second choice.

Did you say the first choice, “less?” That’s right!

Next, read the groupsign and two sets of letters in the second row.

Which letters stand for this groupsign?

This time, it’s the second choice, “ance.”

How about in the third row?

If you said the groupsign with dots 46-n is the second choice, “sion,” you got it!

And which letters in the last row stand for the groupsign at the beginning?

The groupsign with dots 46-t is the first choice, “ount.”

In row 1, read the four letters that spell out the first part of a word, d-e-c-i.

Now, read the two groupsigns below this row and find the one that completes this word.

If you chose the first groupsign, sion, adding this groupsign makes the word “decision.”

Now, read the partial word in row number 2 along with the groupsigns below it.

Which groupsign completes this word?

The second groupsign, ance, makes the word, “balance.”

Next, complete the word in number 3.

This time, the second choice, ment, makes the word “excitement.”

Finally, choose the groupsign to complete the word in number 4.

It’s the first groupsign, ness. This makes, “happiness.”

It can be tricky to remember which contraction is which.

Now, let’s put these four words in alphabetical order.

If you said the word “belong” comes first, you got it!

Which word comes next?

The top word, “bless,” comes next.

And which word follows “bless?”

“Bound” is the right answer.

Finally, which word comes last?

The last word is “bounty.”

Now, read the second column and put all four of these words in alphabetical order.

Here’s the correct order: dance, danger, fence, fender.

If that was a little tricky, feel free to take your time and read over them again.

When you’re ready, continue down the page to find six numbered sentences.

Read sentences 1 and 2. Which of these is brailled correctly?

Sentence 2 is right. This one correctly brailles the word “lessen” without using the less groupsign, because these letters are at the beginning of the word.

Now, read sentences 3 and 4 and find which of these is brailled correctly.

Sentence 3 correctly uses the groupsigns ount in “mounts” and tion in “action.”

Finally, read sentences 5 and 6 and choose which one is brailled correctly.

If you chose number 6, you’re right!

In this sentence, the sion groupsign in “decision” and the ound groupsign in “rebound” are both used correctly.

Laying a tarp prevents water from seeping in.

And using the rain flap keeps the drips away.

Now, where do the first stakes go?

They go on opposite corners.

And finally, do you raise the tent before or after you put in all the poles?

Yes, you should raise the tent after the poles are all in.

For tasks that have several steps, sometimes it’s helpful to braille the directions and keep them on hand.
