Alright, let's check out the dot 5 words for this workshop. Turn to page 7 in the workbook. At the top of the page, read the dot 5 words: lord, know, young, question, father, mother, right.
Now, let's write a passage about owls using these dot 5 words. These uncontracted paragraphs can be found on pages 8 to 10 of the workbook for reference.
Start by indenting and writing this sentence as the first paragraph of a story:
Did you know that owls are nocturnal birds of prey, comma, and they pursue other animals for food, comma, lording the skies with hook, hyphen, tipped beaks and sharp talons?
Nocturnal birds of prey hunt at night.
Have you questioned how birds of prey can capture prey so well?
When owls hunt for prey, comma, they are stealthy.
The wings of an owl are silent in flight.
This will allow them to take the prey without causing fright.
The sharp talons and curved beak give owls the right tools to grasp the prey.
Now, let's begin a new paragraph and write:
Some types of owls mate for life and return to the same nesting site each year.
The female owl is called an owl hen.
An owl coco is a mature male owl and can father offspring.
You may ask the question, comma, opening quotation mark, How do owls pair off with the right mate ?, closing quotation mark.
If you'd like to know, comma, hooting is involved.
A male owl will hoot to attract females.
When a female owl hears the right hoot that interests her, comma, she will respond.
The male owl will then know she is interested.
He will bring the owl hen gifts of prey and fluff his feathers to impress her.
Start a new paragraph and braille:
Male owls do not lord over the female.
An owl coco will find a territory, comma, but the owl hen will select the right nest site to have the youngsters.
Then the pair of owls will lord over and protect the nest.
The owl hen will lay 1, hyphen, 14 eggs.
The mother sits on the eggs to keep them the right temperature.
The eggs hatch 3, hyphen, 5 weeks later.
Let's write another paragraph.
An owlet is a young baby owl.
Owlets rely on the male owl to hunt and bring food to the nest, comma, while they rely on the motherly instincts of the female owl to tear the prey into small pieces and feed them.
They leave the nest only for short periods of time.
When the time comes, comma, owlets explore outside of the nest, comma, questioning the surroundings.
At this time, comma, they are known as nestlings.
Nestlings will not fully leave the nest until the time is right.
Indent for the last paragraph and write:
What is the right time to flee the nest?
When the nestling is able to fly, comma, it is known as fledging.
The process of fledging occurs in 5, hyphen, 8 weeks.
Flight feathers will develop.
The flight feathers are stiff wings that allow a bird to lift off in flight.
When the flight feathers are developed, comma, it is the right time for the young owls to flee the nest.
