Alright, let's check out these shortforms. Turn to page 56 in the workbook. At the top of the page, read the shortforms, because, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond.

In this workshop, you'll be writing paragraphs using shortforms. These uncontracted paragraphs can be found on pages 57 through 59 of the workbook for reference.

Indent and begin the first paragraph:

There are places that are below the radar for most people, comma, and few humans will ever visit because of some very special reasons.

For example, comma, what lies behind the doors of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway may be beyond the imagination of many.

On this island between Norway and the North Pole, comma, lie 250 million crop seeds in giant vaults beneath a mountain.

The seeds are protected because there might be a natural disaster before important crop seeds could be saved.

Now, let's begin a new paragraph and write:

Another out, hyphen, of, hyphen, the, hyphen, way place is Snake Island, comma, which is a dangerous island beside Brazil, comma, where few besides scientists are allowed to go.

There are between 2,000 and 4,000 venomous snakes on this island, comma, which is 25 miles beyond the coast of Brazil.

If bitten, comma, a person would die from the Golden Lancehead pit viper bite before they could get help, comma, because its bite is so venomous.

Poachers have gone behind the law to capture snakes for money, comma, because the venom is so valuable for medical heart trials.

Indent and braille the next paragraph:

In northwestern France, comma, below steep hollowed out cliffs, comma, lies a cave system beneath which prehistoric cave drawings were found.

Between the 600 drawings and 1,500 engravings, comma, scientists can study beyond what we have known before about Paleolithic man.

Only scientists can visit Lascaux caves now, comma, because lights used before 1963 caused algae to grow there.

Start a new paragraph and write:

Beyond the Bay of Bengal, comma, India, comma, lies another island that is not accessible to most.

North Sentinel Island is well hidden behind a ring of coral reefs.

No one goes there because the Sentinelese have killed everyone who has gone beyond the reef in the last 200 years.

The size of the tribe is between 80 and 150 people, comma, but some say it could be beyond that, dash, up to 500.

In the 1800s researchers took some tribal members before they were protected, comma, but they soon died from disease.

The Sentinelese fish beneath the reef waters, comma, and eat nothing beyond what they can grow on the island.

Now finish the passage by writing the last paragraph:

Just below Iceland, comma, a new island formed in 1965 because of volcanic eruptions.

No one is allowed on Surtsey Island besides highly, hyphen, trained scientists, comma, because its fragile ecosystem is being studied.

Besides the origin of the island, comma, scientists also study how new species grow before humans interact with them.

Studying beyond the surface and beneath the island will show how long the island will remain stable before being reclaimed by the ocean.
