If you don't already know how to read these strong groupsigns, we recommend first completing Hadley's Reading workshop, Contracted Braille workshop 6, Strong Groupsigns: ch, sh, th, wh, ou, st.

Begin by putting paper in your writing device, using whichever writing device you have available.

Okay, let's check out some strong groupsigns. Turn to page 34 in the workbook. At the top of the page, read the strong groupsigns: ch, sh, st, th, wh, ou.

Notice that the groupsign is listed, followed by the parentheses and the letters that formed that groupsign.

Now, you can practice writing these groupsigns in sentences. These uncontracted sentences can be found on pages 35 and 36 of the workbook for reference.

To begin, start on a new line and indent two spaces.

Write this sentence:

Hello, Ashaki, comma, and thank you for that note as I miss you chum, exclamation mark.

Next, braille:

I crave more knowledge, comma, so I say, opening quotation mark, yes, closing quotation mark, to the Polish class.

Try writing:

We can have fun as we watch videos that help us grasp a new language.

On the next line write:

We will have a blast as we study side by side.

Now braille:

It is unfathomable that we met more than four decades ago.

Next, write:

I am so glad that you chose me for a roommate back on 8, hyphen, 24, hyphen, 1965.

Now, try the sentence:

Do you recall what mischief we made while at college?

Next, braille:

Our dormitory assistant sure did call us, capital letter, trouble.

Next, braille:

What an absolutely lively trip at college, comma, with you by my side, exclamation mark.

Now write:

Do you recall our run to the store to buy rawhide for the dogs?

Try the sentence:

What made us do that with no cash, question mark.

Next, write:

Sh, comma, don't tell, comma, but it cracks me up to this very hour, exclamation mark.

Now braille:

Well, comma, my pal, comma, I have to go, comma, but without you, comma, I am out of sorts.

Next, try:

I'd rather waste an hour or two with you than visit with any others.

Finally, braille:

I miss you, comma, Ashaki, dash, so try to come soon, exclamation mark.

Turn to the contracted sentences found on pages 37 and 38 in the workbook to check your writing.

Did you recall that groupsigns cannot be used to cross compound words like rawhide?

Did you spell, out, the letters s and h for, sh?

Consider the word, without, in the 13th sentence. The ou contraction for, out, can be a tricky one.

Recall that strong wordsigns must stand alone. So when, out, is part of a longer word, like without, use the ou groupsign, but also add the letter t.
