Your Profile

Hi, my name is Vikki Vaughan and in today's workshop we'll walk through creating a Facebook profile. We'll personalize our profile by adding several photos and some personal info. This series is designed for people with low vision. If you use a screen reader, be sure to check out Hadley's screen reading version of this series.

Before we get started, you'll need to create your Facebook account. You'll find directions for creating your account in the resource section below this workshop. It will take you step by step through the process. This workshop picks up after you've created your Facebook account and takes you to the next step, creating your profile.

The first thing we'll do today is create our Facebook profile. We'll add two photos to our profile, our cover photo and our profile picture. The cover photo is a larger photo at the top of our profile. You can think of it like a background image for our profile. It's only visible when someone is viewing our Facebook wall. Our profile picture is the image that others see throughout Facebook, like when we comment on a friend's post.

We'll start off by selecting our account button in the top right corner. This opens a dropdown menu. We then select our account name, the first item in our list. We've left the home page and we're now in our profile on our Facebook wall.

Let's add our profile picture by selecting the camera icon in the bottom right of our blank profile picture. From here, we have a dialogue box, which asks us to choose between uploading a photo or adding a frame. Let's use our pointer to select the upload photo button.

From here, we select the picture we want others to see when they look at our profile. We then select the open button to add our photo. We can center our image by clicking on this tool and dragging the image to the correct position. We can also zoom in or out of our picture by dragging the slider bar below our picture. In the edit field above our picture, we can add a description of our picture. I'm typing female with blonde hair and brown eyes.

Finally, we select the save button. We'll want to use a picture that is the best quality available. Keep in mind that we don't have to use a picture in our profile. We can also use a favorite image. Since our profile picture and our name will always be public, pictures make it easier for others to identify us if they want to send us a friend request.

We can also add information to our Facebook profile that makes it easier for others to find us. This information like our name, profile and cover photo will always be public. We get to choose what information we want to include in our intro section.

Let's add some basic information to our profile. While on our profile page, we scroll down to the intro heading. Then we select the edit details button. As we scroll down, we find different categories such as work, education, current city, hometown, relationship, and name pronunciation.

We have the option to add or edit information for any of these categories. Let's practice by adding information about where we work. We select the add a workplace link.

From there, we select another at a workplace link. We land in an edit field entitled company. I'll enter Hadley here.

Let's tab to our next field, position. I'll enter my position, learning expert in assistive technology, and then tab to the next field, city/town. Here, let's enter Winnetka, Illinois. We can also provide more details such as a description of our workplace, if we're currently still working, and the date we started.

Once we've completed our entries, we select the save button and we're back in our profile.

Now that we have our profile picture and information completed, let's create our cover photo. As we discussed earlier, our cover photo is the larger photo at the top of our profile above our profile picture. Like our profile picture, our cover photos are public, which means anyone visiting our profile will be able to see them.

At the top of our profile page, let's select the camera icon in the bottom right corner of this blank area. At this point, we find a couple of choices in a dropdown menu. We can select upload a photo to upload a photo from our computer. If we already have photos posted on Facebook, we can also choose select photo to choose from an album on Facebook. Let's select the upload photo button.

We select our desired cover photo and then we select the open button to add our photo. Once we've chosen our cover photo, we can reposition it by clicking on the image and dragging it up or down.

Finally, we select the Save Changes button in the top right corner of our window. In today's workshop, we created our Facebook profile. We personalized our profile by adding a profile picture and a cover photo. We also added some personal details to our profile. These features help our friends locate us on Facebook.
