iPhone/iPad: Siri for Texting

Hello, my name is Douglas Walker. Today we'll be sending a text message using Siri. Now, Apple likes to call Siri our personal assistant. And with Siri, we're able to do things like set a reminder, get walking directions, or even place a phone call. And today is all about sending a text message. So let's just jump right in and use Siri to send our text message.

Most of the time Siri is turned on during our setup process. However, if you didn't have a chance to set it up then, check out our resource area just below this workshop. There you'll find step-by-step directions for exactly how to get Siri all set up.

Yeah, and we currently have VoiceOver running, which is Apple's built in screen reader. And this will ensure that we get the most interaction out of Siri. And if you're not familiar with VoiceOver, you're really gonna want to check out our listen with VoiceOver series.

All right, all we have to do to start a text with Siri is to either say, "Siri," or, "Hey Siri." It, you know, really all depends on how we've set up our phone for that. And then we'll say, "Text," along with a phone number that we wanna send it to, or if the person we're texting has been added to our Contacts app we can just say, "Text," along with that person's name.

Now, after we finish speaking our recipient's name or number Siri will ask us what we want to say. Yeah, and it's a pretty good idea to think about what you wanna say. Otherwise, if you're like me, you might find yourself getting a bit tongue tied at times.

Anyway, after Siri asks us what we want to say, we just speak our message and Siri will then repeat our message back to us. And then Siri will ask, "Do you want me to send it?" Now we can either send it by saying, "Yes," or if we change our mind and decide not to send it for some reason, we can just say, "Cancel." And, of course, our message won't be sent then. Douglas: I hope you're having a great day.

Siri: It says, "I hope you're having a great day." Send it?

Douglas: Yes. Done.

Yeah, I know, it's kind of sad. I just text myself. Now, Siri will continue to listen and we could make another request if we like, which is really great. But we'll just go ahead and swipe up to close our Siri screen for now. Yeah, and there you go.
