Are you ready to learn more about numbers?
Feel the braille in the top left corner of the page. This is the number “1.”
Below the middle line, you’ll find a row of braille numbers, 1 through 10.
Go ahead and read the numbers in order.
And here’s something new: Feel the braille in the bottom right corner of the page.
Did you recognize the number 1? Braille numbers will now be in the bottom right corner of each page. You can use them to be sure you’re on the right page.

Let’s learn some punctuation that can be used with numbers.
Feel the braille in the top left corner of the page. The first symbol is a full cell. The second symbol is a decimal point, dots 2-5, and 6.
The decimal point is often referred to as a “dropped d.”
In the following workshops, the full cell helps show the position of the new symbol, because some punctuation marks use the bottom of the braille cell.
The decimal point uses the middle dot on the first side of the braille cell and the middle and bottom dots on the second side of the braille cell.
Below the middle line, you’ll find three rows of decimal points.
Place your fingers on the decimal point at the beginning of the first row. No need to count, just feel each row from left to right.

Below the middle line, you’ll find three rows of decimal points.
From left to right, count the number of decimal points in the first row.
There are four decimal points in the first row.
Now, count the number of decimal points in the second row.
There are five.
And last, count the number of decimal points in the third row.
If you counted eight decimal points in this row, you found them all!

Let’s practice reading the full cell and the decimal point.
The decimal point is similar to the letter d, but it is in the lower part of the cell.
Below the middle line are two rows of braille.
One row has full cells and d’s, and one row has full cells and decimal points. Find the row that has the full cells and decimal points. You might find this a bit tricky, so you may want to take a little extra time here.
Did you find the decimal points in the first row? That’s correct!

Feel the braille in the top left corner of the page. This is the number “1.5.” Notice that there are no spaces in numbers with decimal points.
Below the middle line are three numbers, each written with a decimal point.
Find the row with the number 1.5.
The middle row is 1.5.
Which row is 4.1?
Did you find 4.1 in the first row?
If you did, you got it!
How about 9.2?
The last row is 9.2.

Which row is the measurement 8.5 inches?
The second row is 8.5 inches.
Which row reads 6.3 feet?
The last row reads 6.3 feet.
What about 0.9 inches?
Did you find this in the first row? That’s right!
And which row reads 4.3 feet? The third row says 4.3 feet.
Don’t worry if you didn’t get them all. Just replay this page at the end. As with anything new, give yourself time and patience, and you’ll get there.

Feel the full cell and the comma in the top left corner of the page. The comma, dot 2, is similar to the letter “a,” dot 1, but it’s lower in the cell.

The second row says 3,200. Did you feel the comma right after the number 3?

And how many attendees are listed in the last row?
If you said 2,300, you’re right!

Feel the braille in the top left corner of the page. This is the full cell followed by the fraction line, dots 3-4.
The fraction line uses the bottom dot on the first side of the braille cell and the top dot on the second side.
The braille fraction line looks like the print fraction line. The line slopes up from the bottom left side to the top right side.
Below the middle line, you’ll find three rows of fraction lines.
Place your fingers on the fraction line at the beginning of the first row. No need to count, just feel each row from left to right.

Feel the two fraction lines in the top left corner of the page.
Below the middle line, you’ll find three rows of fraction lines.
From left to right, count the number of fraction lines in the first row.
There are three fraction lines in the first row.
Now, count the number of fraction lines in the second row.
If you counted five, you’re right!
And last, count the number of fraction lines in the third row.
There are four in this row.

Notice that the fraction line feels similar to the letter “k,” except it leans to the right.

Feel the number in the top left corner of the page. This is the fraction “2/3.”
Notice that fractions are written with the numeric indicator at the beginning, and no spaces.
Below the middle line are three rows of simple fractions. Find the fraction 2/3.
Did you choose the last row? If so, you found it!

Feel the fraction 1/2 in the top left corner of the page.
You can label measuring cups and spoons using the fraction line!
Find the sticker in the top right corner of the page.
It says, “1/2.”
Below the middle line are four boxes arranged from left to right. Each box contains a fraction.
Find the fraction 1/2.
If you found it in the second box, you’re right!
You can place the sticker labeled “1/2” over the correct box, or use it to label your own measuring cup.

Feel the braille in the top left corner of the page. This is the mixed fraction “1 3/4.”
When a fraction is part of a mixed number, like 1 3/4, you don’t use any spaces in braille. But you do include two numeric indicators−one at the beginning for the whole number and one just before the fraction.

1 3/4 is in the second row.
Which row has the fraction 1 2/3?
