Hadley presents Braille Special Symbols Writing Workshop 1: Special Symbols and Electronic Addresses.

If you don't already know how to read electronic addresses, we recommend first doing Hadley's reading workshop, Braille Special Symbols Workshop 1: Special Symbols and Electronic Addresses.

Begin by putting paper in your writing device using the writing device you have available to you, including the slate and stylus, the Perkins brailler, or an electronic note taker. Also, you will need your braille workbook. If you don't already have one, call Hadley at 847-784-2816 and we'll mail one right out to you.

Okay, let's take a fast look at this first set of special symbols. Turn to page 1 in the workbook. At the top of the page, read the symbols: @, #, and _.

Let's practice writing these symbols in a list of numbered sentences. The sentences you'll be writing will be read in this audio. Capitalization and punctuation will be read aloud only as needed for clarity.

To begin, start on a new line and write 1. Be sure to indent runover sentences two spaces.

Also, use capitalization and punctuation as you would in print. Do not divide words between lines and write all numbers with numerals, not words.

Let's begin the first sentence.

2. Buy these ingredients to make a big batch of cookies: 2# of butter, 3# of sugar, and 4# of flour.

You can now check your work by comparing your sentences to the contracted braille sentences on pages 2 through 4. Take a look at sentences 6 and 12. Did you notice that the lower be, con, and dis contractions cannot be used at the beginning of a word immediately after the hashtag?
