Braille Special Symbols Writing 2 - Special Punctuation

Hadley presents Braille Special Symbols, Writing Workshop 2: Special Punctuation.

If you don't already know how to read special punctuation, we recommend first doing Hadley's reading workshop, Braille Special Symbols, Workshop 2: Special Punctuation.

Alright, let's take a look at these special symbols. Turn to page 5 in the workbook. At the top of the page, read the symbols: ', [], {}.

Capitalization and punctuation will be read aloud only as needed for clarity. To begin, start on a new line to write each sentence. Runover lines will be indented two spaces. Be sure to use capitalization and punctuation as you would in print, and do not divide words between lines. Also, write all numbers with numerals, not words.

Now, let's write these symbols in sentences. Start on a new line and write 1.

1. Before she [Asha] went to the store, he [Fason] gave her directions.
2. Select your pizza toppings {onion, pepperoni, bacon, peppers, olives, anchovies} and place your order.
3. "When I say 'Immediately,' I mean right now," the mother said to her daughter.
4. "He encouraged me by telling me, 'You read well' in front of everyone!"
5. Today's chores {wash clothes, make dinner, clean bathroom, make hair appointment} cannot be put off until tomorrow.
6. He referenced an old book (To Kill a Mockingbird [1960]) that he enjoyed very much.
7. "Why did she call that man a 'traitor'?" Niara asked.
8. The two teams in the final game [Eagles and Cowboys] were fierce opponents.
9. My sister said, "The baby started talking today and said, 'Dada'."
10. My weekly shopping list {milk, bread, eggs, fruit, hamburger, chips} is ready to go.
11. Mr. Jones [the plaintiff] did not want to press charges.
12. Find the perfect paint scheme {symmetrical or heritage} for your home.
13. My niece blabbered, "Isaac laughed and said, 'You're so loquacious.' What does that mean?"
14. She drove 60 [miles per hour] on the highway to town.
15. Add a flavor {hazelnut, vanilla, caramel} to your coffee and stir.
16. Jan explained, "The dentist told me 'Brush after each meal'."
17. The ship [the USS Farragut] was commissioned in July of 2005.
18. Please pick your ice cream mix-in {gummy bears, chocolate sauce, chopped nuts, sprinkles} and then take a seat.
19. "Don't sit there! The sign says, 'wet paint'."
20. Paddle the creek to the left [Little Orange Creek] not the creek on the right [Muddy Stream].

You can now check your work by comparing your sentences to the contracted braille sentences on pages 6 and 7.
