Reacting to a Post

Hi, my name is Vikki Vaughan, and today we'll dive into various ways we react to a friend's post on Facebook. We'll explore some of the tools that help make our reactions more fun. This series is designed for people who use a screen reader. If you're not a screen reader user, be sure to check out Hadley's low vision version of this series. Let's begin on our Facebook homepage.

Vikki: We'll press Ctrl + Home to make sure we're starting from the top of our page

Screen Reader: Navigation, landmark Facebook menu heading level two.

Vikki: We'll press our heading keyboard shortcut H several times to move past the publisher to our newsfeed.

Screen Reader: Home heading level one.

Vikki: We'll press H.

Vikki: And then H again to move to our shortcuts.

Vikki: Let's press our H key to move to home.

Vikki: This is where we find our friends post. Now let's Tab to our first post.

Screen Reader: Hadley link heading, level four.

Vikki: It's from Hadley. Keep in mind, we can always use the Control key to silence our screen reader. Let's tab to our first link.

Screen Reader: Six H link.

Vikki: This tells us that Hadley created this post six hours ago. Let's Tab again.

Screen Reader: Actions for this post menu button, collapsed sub menu.

Vikki: This button is called actions for this post button. We heard it has a sub menu. When selected, this button allows us to save a post, among other options. We'll move on to our next control with Tab.

Screen Reader: Hide post link.

Vikki: Here we have a button that when selected, allows us to hide the post from our newsfeed. We don't want to do that today, so let's press the Tab key once again.

Screen Reader: Birding with vision loss. Hadley graphic link.

Vikki: This is a Hadley presents post about birding with vision loss. We heard there's a link in this section of the post. If we were to select this link, we'd be taken to the Hadley website. There, we could listen to a recording of this podcast on birding with vision loss. Since this workshop is about reacting to a post, we'll just Tab to the next part, the more button.

Screen Reader: More button.

Vikki: When we select the more button, we open a window that tells us more about Hadley. We'll skip that for now and move on with our Tab key.

Vikki: This button announces the total number of reactions to this post. Let's Tab to our next control.

Screen Reader: Three shares button.

Vikki: This tells us how many people shared this post on their wall. Our next three tabs take us through the Speechify menu. This tool allows our friends who don't use screen readers to have the post read allowed to them. Since we already have our fantastic screen reader, we'll quickly Tab through this post.

Vikki: Our next Tab moves us to the like button. It displays a gray thumbs up graphic.

Screen Reader: Like button.

Vikki: When we use our Spacebar to select this button,

Screen Reader: Remove like.

Vikki: The gray thumbs up graphic changes to blue. It's a toggle control, so with each press of the Spacebar,

Screen Reader: Like.

Vikki: It is activated and deactivated. With the next press of our Tab key, we land on the react button.

Screen Reader: React button.

Vikki: When we press our Spacebar to open this tool,

Screen Reader: Reactions dialogue toolbar.

Vikki: Seven different reaction icons pop up. With each press of our right arrow key, we move from left to right. The reactions include like.

Screen Reader: Like button.

Vikki: Love.

Screen Reader: Love button.

Vikki: Care.

Screen Reader: Care button.

Vikki: Haha.

Screen Reader: Haha button.

Vikki: Wow.

Screen Reader: Wow button.

Vikki: Sad.

Screen Reader: Sad button.

Vikki: And angry.

Screen Reader: Angry button.

Vikki: Since we're really excited about this latest Hadley post, we'll use our left arrow key to move back through the reactions until we land on the love reaction.

Screen Reader: Sad button, wow button, haha button, care button, love button.

Vikki: Let's select the love icon by pressing the Spacebar. It looks like a red circle with a large white heart at its center.

Screen Reader: Space, button change, love reaction.

Vikki: When we select a reaction icon, it becomes visible to anyone who sees the post. It also lets Facebook know that we like these types of posts. Facebook then starts to send us more posts like the one we liked or loved. With the next press of our Tab key, we find the comment button.

Screen Reader: Leave a comment button.

Vikki: Let's press the Spacebar to open an edit field where we'll type a comment.

Screen Reader: Write a comment. Edit multi-line blank.

Vikki: Let's type, so interesting, exclamation point.

Screen Reader: S, O, space, I, N, T, E, R, E, S, T, I, N, G, bang.

Vikki: Facebook also gives us other options for expressing our feelings about the post. While still in the comment edit field, let's Tab to the five tools in this section, the avatar.

Screen Reader: List with five items, comment with an avatar sticker button.

Vikki: Emoji.

Screen Reader: Insert an emoji button.

Vikki: Photo slash video.

Screen Reader: Attach a photo or video button.

Vikki: GIF.

Screen Reader: Comment with a GIF button.

Vikki: And sticker.

Vikki: I think I'm happy with just our comment, so let's press our Shift + Tab repeatedly to move back to our comment edit field.

Vikki: Okay, we've typed a comment, so let's press the Enter key to post it.

Vikki: We have one last way to react to a friend's post. Let's press Shift + Tab several times to move back to the send this to your friend's button.

Screen Reader: Send this to friends or post it on your timeline button.

Vikki: When we press our Spacebar to select it, a dropdown menu opens.

Screen Reader: Share options dialogue. Share now friends button. Share options.

Vikki: There are seven ways to share this post. They include share now with friends.

Screen Reader: Button, share now, friends.

Vikki: Share to our feed.

Vikki: Send in Messenger.

Vikki: We use our down arrow to move through the menu, and our Spacebar to select an option. The default is set to share with friends. Let's leave it there and press Escape to close this menu.
