A guide can help us get through doorways by letting us know just a few things. First, we need to know when we are about to go through a door and which side it's on. Then we need to know whether the door will open toward us or away from us. Once we know what to expect, we make sure our free arm is on the same side as the door.
The Switching Sides Workshop outlines how to move from one side of our guide to the other if we need a refresher. As our guide goes through the door, we use our free arm to catch the door and hold it as we go through. We hold our arm out and in front of our face and upper body to do this.
To protect our upper body while going through a double door, we place the back of our free hand on our forehead, like we're checking our own temperature. Then we extend the arm out in front of us several inches as we go through the doorway. Contact a learning expert with any questions you may have, or for more tips like this one.
